Oregon Zoo Names Baby Orangutan After Dolly Parton’s Famous Song

Jolene was born on April 13 to Kitra, her first mother.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One of Oregon Zoo’s newest residents finally has a name!

The zoo’s new baby orangutan has been named Jolene, inspired by Dolly Parton’s classic song and those flamboyant locks of auburn hair.

Jolene was born on April 13 to Kitra, her first mother.

Because they gave Kitra and her newborn baby plenty of space to bond, zookeepers say they couldn’t confirm whether the baby was a boy or a girl until recently. Once they figured it out, the zoo says their team of keepers knew exactly what they would call it.

“They’ve been playing the song on repeat ever since!” Kate Gilmore, who oversees the zoo’s primate area, said.

Kitra, 20, moved to Oregon from the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo in Ohio in 2015.

“Kitra can decide if she and Jolene are up for a trip outside or prefer some privacy,” Gilmore said. “As Jolene gets older and more curious, we expect them to be outdoors more and more.”
